This is really an excellent bridge between the fabulous first two books in The Iron Fey series, both of which I absolutely adored.

I LOVED that this little short-story was about Meghan & Ash's journey to the Unseelie Court... not only the physical journey but also their romantic/emotional journey.

Meghan is starting to fully embrace her fey heritage, and with that comes the fact that she takes her contracts seriously and recognizes that she must fulfill her end of the bargain.... including the contract she made with Ash... where she agreed to accept his help in getting Ethan back (which she needed), and in return, she promised to surrender herself to Ash so that he would bring her to the Winter Court, as Queen Mab (his mother) ordered.

Ash's feelings for Meghan are growing exponentially (and vice-versa), yet he is torn between his vow that he has to fulfill, which cannot be rescinded, and his growing feelings for Meghan who, being a half-feary of the Summer Court, is also his enemy.

Meghan continues to amaze Ash (and me) with her compassion and determination... and I love seeing her grow in this regard.

Their journey is also not without risk and danger. Part of the danger is that they are being chased by something they cannot see but can certainly sense. Meghan, being half human, is also vulnerable to the weather conditions in the Winter Court... another danger she must overcome.

Puck is still recovering from the injuries he sustained in The Iron King so he does not really have a part in this mini-story, sadly. Although, Grimalkin is popping in and out of the picture when it suits him (but does lend a helping paw)!

This was definitely a nice little bridge to the next book, The Iron Daughter.

On the Writing & Story:

I was so excited when I picked this book at the library a few weeks ago. I couldn't wait to dive into it. I'm not a huge fan of dystopians, but I was attracted to this one because the premise was so unique. The year is 2083 and life as we know it has been drastically altered. Society has almost reverted back to the 1920's when prohibition and organized crime reigned.

Anya Balanchine, the main character, is the daughter of an infamous crime boss who ruled the Balanchine family and its chocolate empire. Yes, in 2083, chocolate is an illegal substance. I'm not a big chocolate fan, but I have many friends who wouldn't survive in a world in which chocolate was only available on the black market. However, I don't think I'd be too happy in this world since caffeine is also illegal. The government believes that things like chocolate and caffeine caused society to crumble. Speakeasies spring up throughout the United States and crime families climb up the ladder of power by peddling forbidden goods. This idea is so interesting and made of awesome.

However, the book just didn't live up to my expectations. My biggest problem was that some of the elements within the plot didn't do a lot to move the story forward. I found myself bored throughout several sections in the middle of the book. My mind would find some daydream to latch onto and then I'd come back into the story and be totally lost. In spite of the intriguing concept, I found Anya's life to be somewhat mundane. She is a normal girl whose learning to be a woman and falling in love in the midst of this new society, but her life is school, her family, and her boyfriend. Yes, she has to deal with some issues due to her family's shading dealings that sets her apart from other YA characters, but don't we all have family issues from time to time? Many of the other elements she deals with such as her ailing grandmother and being in charge of her family are things that real teens often have to learn to handle. Furthermore, I was somewhat disappointed that so much of the book revolved around Anya and her family while I felt like the world building that I have come to expect with dystopians was seriously lacking.

In spite of my lackluster reaction to this one, I did find the elements concerning the crime family elements to be fascinating ones. I kept having to remind myself that this book was set in the future. The plot held true with what I know about organized crime in American history. In addition, I am a sucker for Romeo and Juliet plotlines. Anya's relationship with Win certainly delivers on that front. I'm curious to see what will become of them in the future. Furthermore, the structure of the novel was interesting. I loved that each chapter began with a quick run down of the things that Anya had done before the chapter went into detail about the events. I also liked that the story is written as if the reader is sitting down with Anya as she tells you the story of her life.

Anya is one of the elements that makes this book stand out in my mind. I admire her strength and loyalty. No matter how difficult things got for her, she still managed to find solutions and do what was best for those she loved. You have to admire her conviction. However, this was not an easy read - it's not happy and things don't always go the way you want. That may be part of my problem with deciding if I truly liked this one or not; I have to be in a certain mood to appreciate the really dark stuff.

I would still recommend this book to those who love crime dramas and romance. At its core, All These Things I've Done is a coming of age story. It has a lot of merits and is well written, but it just wasn't the read for me at the time. I really wanted to like this book more than I did.

On the Audio:

When I realized that Ilyana Kadushin was the narrator of this one I wasn't sure what to expect. Kadushin narrated the Twilight Saga audiobooks and while they were well done and enjoyable there were certain elements about her narration that bothered me. For example, in the Saga audiobooks she pronounces Bella as Bell-uh - that drove me crazy. In this audiobook, she started the book out pronouncing Win's last name one way and by the middle she had changed the way she pronounced it. I know this is a random thing to be annoyed by, but when that last name comes up numerous times in the text it is hard to ignore. Overall, I don't mind Kadushin's voice or the way she chooses to narrate, but I have to admit the name thing is quickly becoming a pet peeve of mine.

One Last Gripe: I didn't like that Win's dad didn't seem to care about his son's happiness.

My Favorite Thing About This Book: The setting in this one is phenomenal. The way that Zevin describes New York City was one of my favorite elements of this book. I love the vision that she sews for the reader.

Summary:

In 2083, chocolate and coffee are illegal, paper is hard to find, water is carefully rationed, and New York City is rife with crime and poverty. It consists of going to school, taking care of her siblings and her dying grandmother, trying to avoid falling in love with the new assistant D.A.'s son, and avoiding her loser ex-boyfriend. That is until her ex is accidently poisoned by the chocolate her family manufactures and the police think she's to blame. Suddenly, Anya finds herself thrust unwillingly into the spotlight--at school, in the news, and most importantly, within her mafia family.

To coin a phrase from one of my very best book-friends, The Night Circus is unlike anything I've ever read before... and there can't be a truer statement to make when it comes to this book. I can also say that it wasn't anything that I expected it to be. Was that a pleasant surprise? Yes and no... but yes for the most part. I will explain...

Set around the latter 1800's and spanning int the early 20th Century, at its core, the story is about an age-old rivalry between two instructors in magic... Hector Bowen (aka Prospero the Enchanter) and Mr. A. (Alexander) H-- (no... I didn't forget his last name, it is never given). And in this story, the Circus itself becomes the venue... the forum for the contest... and is befittingly dubbed Le Cirque des Reves -- Circus of Dreams -- another title that could not be more true.

The contest is essentially between Celia and Marco, the protege of these two rivaling instructors, but also involves a larger cast of characters with key roles in this challenge, unbeknownst to them. At the age of five, Celia is dropped at the doorstep of her estranged father, Hector, after her mother commits suicide. Hector can perform magic but the real talent is MAKING the magic look like an illusion so people will believe in it... not the other way around. After seeing that his daughter possesses some raw talent, and deciding he can work with her, he gets in touch with an old 'friend' (Alexander) and they start a new 'wager' on who is the better magical instructor. Alexander accepts the challenge and promptly searches for his own recruit and plucks nine-year-old Marco out of an orphanage. We don't know what he sees in the young, unremarkable Marco but unbeknownst to the young boy, he's been inducted into the grandest contest anyone could ever imagine (or never imagine). With little interaction with his seemingly uncaring adoptive father/instructor, Marco begins to wield magic in epic proportions. Concurrently, Celia is being taught to perfect her own magic, often through brutal and exhaustive lessons at the hands of her father, Hector.

Once Celia and Marco are older... they become intricately involved in the Circus itself. Celia, as an illusionist, and Marco as an assistant to the 'ring-master-behind-the-scenes' who brought the circus together, Chandresh Lefevre. All the while, the stage is being set for the most unique Circus ever invented.

It is not unexpected that this Circus creates a lot of talk wherever it shows up. And it literally just shows up. Where there was once an empty field one day, is magically filled with an elaborate network of black and white tents the next morning. And furthermore, curious people show up at the gates only to find a sign that reads it opens at dusk and closes at dawn.

The Circus is constantly evolving with new spectacles being introduced by both Celia and Marco. For much of the story, one of them does not know who their opponent is... but they begin to admire each others' work...and that becomes the basis for their love story.

To be clear, this is NOT a romance novel... but at the core of it, there is a love story... and there IS a huge difference between those two statements. Celia and Marco's love manifests over time through their magic... and understanding each others' magic is sort of an intimate thing... more so than being in close physical proximity to each other. The author chose to make their love story a key element of the challenge but also made it very subtle. Perhaps, I was looking for a bit more of an EPIC love story... and that would really be my only complaint with The Night Circus.

The story is narrated through several of the character's perspectives... not just through Celia and Marco, but that did not make it hard to follow. I think the way the author pulled all the past, present and future events together was really quite brilliant and she created a beautiful story as a whole.

This is going to be difficult to sum up and put into words... I found that there was nothing that really drove the story... but I still found myself magically pulled in (??!!) I can't figure it out why both sentiments are true in my mind. For me, I wouldn't classify The Night Circus as "I couldn't put it down"... because I could... but it was just simply a very enjoyable read... and I did love it for its uniqueness and originality. Erin Morgenstern's writing was quite beautiful and illustrative and I swear that she possesses magical powers in those departments. I could almost smell the smells, see the visions described before me and feel amazed at watching the spectacle in my mind. It is one of the most imaginative books I've ever read. The concept is incredibly unique and a refreshing change of pace. I'd recommend it to anyone who loves a fantastical story but appreciates a subtle love story alongside.

Summary:

The circus arrives without warning. No announcements precede it. It is simply there, when yesterday it was not. Within the black-and-white striped canvas tents is an utterly unique experience full of breathtaking amazements. It is called Le Cirque des Rêves, and it is only open at night.

But behind the scenes, a fierce competition is underway—a duel between two young magicians, Celia and Marco, who have been trained since childhood expressly for this purpose by their mercurial instructors. Unbeknownst to them, this is a game in which only one can be left standing, and the circus is but the stage for a remarkable battle of imagination and will. Despite themselves, however, Celia and Marco tumble headfirst into love—a deep, magical love that makes the lights flicker and the room grow warm whenever they so much as brush hands.

True love or not, the game must play out, and the fates of everyone involved, from the cast of extraordinary circus performers to the patrons, hang in the balance, suspended as precariously as the daring acrobats overhead.

Written in rich, seductive prose, this spell-casting novel is a feast for the senses and the heart.

Why Ash is my Book Boyfriend:

Although he is already spoken for by Meghan Chase, a girl can still dream to be in Meghan's shoes, sometimes. Ash's devotion to Meghan goes beyond words... he literally went to the Ends of the Earth for her. Who could resist that kind of devotion??

And who can resist a hot guy with a sword??

He hit all the right buttons for me. He is the epitome of the perfect "knight in shining armour"... literally. In my eyes, he is the perfect love interest, leading man, hero. Despite his icey facade, he was incredibly sweet and loving towards Meghan. He always wanted what was best for her. Ash was fiercely protective of Meghan, yet tough on her too. For example, when she asked him to teach her to fight, he was not gentle with her. Ash loved Meghan enough to teach her to fight for real... with skill, instincts and cunning, which in turn, also boosted her confidence, and helped make her a stronger person all around. He has faults... he can be stubborn at times (although I would argue he's more determined than stubborn), and he has a past he isn't proud of, but that makes him who he is now. If I had to describe my perfect 'book boyfriend'... it would be Ashallyn' darkmyr Tallyn.

Here's just a tiny sample of Ash's awesomeness:

“His forehead bumped softly against mine, his brilliant silver gaze searing into me. “I plan to keep you, from everyone, for as long as I’m alive. That includes Puck, the false king, and anyone else who would take you away.” One corner of his mouth quirked, as I struggled to catch my breath under his powerful scrutiny. “I guess I should’ve warned you that I have a slight possessive streak.” p. 52, The Iron Queen (ebook version), Julie Kagawa.

Who Would be My Perfect Ash:

I have searched high and lo to find someone that matches the perfect image I have of Ash in my mind. So far, the closest image would have to be Ben Barnes, especially in his role as Prince Caspian of the Narnia series. Although I will admit, he still needs 'silver' eyes.

This book has been out in Canada for awhile, but it just hit shelves in the US this month. I had seen several great reviews singing its praises so when I was asked to be part of this tour I jumped at the chance. What I found within these pages is a glimpse into human nature and the life of an addict. Spin will take you on a fascinating journey complete with celebrities, rehab, and an amazing playlist.

One of the things that makes Spin such a compelling read is the main character, Kate Sandford. Kate is one of those almost thirty somethings who just can't seem to let her college years go. She keeps hanging out in the typical university age scenes and most of her friends are still in school. She wants to be a music writer, but she doesn't do much to help that goal become a reality. In fact, on the eve of the biggest interview of her life for a coveted spot at The Line, a music magazine, Kate chooses to get drunk with her friends and shows up hungover to the interview. Needless to say she blows her chance and her need for booze gets even worse. Things start to turn around for Kate when she's contacted by someone who works for The Line and a gossip magazine. He promises her the position she craves if she'll go to rehab to spy on the current "It Girl" and dish about it in a tell all article. Kate must decide what's most important to her - the truth or snagging her dream job.

I loved that Kate was so incredibly flawed. She maintains that she's only in rehab because of the article and she can't see that maybe she truly does have a problem with alcohol. As someone who has seen the effects of alcohol on a family member, this portion of the book really hit home. I can remember my uncle maintaining even in his various trips to rehab that he did not have an addiction. Luckily for Kate, she seems to have some moments of clarity and redemption. The book left me feeling that Kate was on the right path to fixing her issues and becoming happier. At the heart of this story is a girl who is unhappy with her life, but feels powerless to change it. In addition, Kate's sarcasm will keep you laughing in spite of the seriousness of the plot.

I also thought this was a compelling read because of its relevance. I couldn't help but think of the various young starlets who are on paths to self destruction. We see their stories plastered all over the internet and on the tabloids. Spin really made me stop to think about how celebrities are treated. Granted its an understood fact that as someone in the spotlight you lose the ability to be anonymous, but I really wonder what gives people the right to be so invasive. At what point does it become too much? I'm certainly guilty of reading the magazines that detail the lives of the rich and famous. I never stopped to consider how celebrities feel seeing those types of things printed about themselves. I don't think the average person would be too keen about seeing their dirty laundry aired in such a public forum.

Spin is compelling and well written. I've already put McKenzie's other works on my TBR List. I love that she is taking such modern issues and putting her own interesting spin on them. I also loved that this novel was littered with musical references and included a playlist at the end. As a music junkie, I always love these types of elements cropping up as I read.

One Last Gripe: I didn't like that Kate and her sister never really resolved their issues.

This was AWESOME!! I read it in about 5 hours, and totally couldn't put it down! I loved the new spin on shifting (shapes) - dragons!! So much has been written about werewolves etc, that this felt like something someone should have written a long time ago, and I really loved it.

The story focuses on Jacinda, a draki shifter who is not content with her lot in life. Forced into hiding by the hunting activities of man, she is supposed to be happy about being forced to marry and have children to keep the race alive. Jacinda only feels truly free when she is able to fly, but flying time is seriously restricted and life as a dragon seems hardly worth living - so much so that she feels as if she is withering away. One day Jacinda sneaks out to fly and nearly gets caught by hunters... meeting Will, a young hunter, in the process of escaping. He does something entirely unexpected - he lets her go.

The chemistry between Will and Jacinda was written in such a smouldering way that my heart thumped in my chest as they interacted; this is YA friendly, but it will make readers swoon and then some!! There were plenty of twists and turns in the plot as Jacinda struggles to escape her oppressive tribe and to live as a free girl, and I was reading almost so fast that my eyes tripped over some bits in my anticipation of the next part!! When Jacinda visits Will's home, she stumbles across a room which is nothing short of horrifying; it was just brilliantly written, and I felt Jacinda's horror every bit as strongly as she did.

I loved how Jacinda stayed true to herself, despite the horrific way that her mother and sister wanted her inner dragon to wither and die off. By the end of the book, it really seemed like she had backed herself into such a tight corner, I have no idea how it is going to work out, and I desperately need to know!!

Following is my review for The Iron King after I read it the first time. I have subsequently read this book several times as each sequel was released and has ultimately become my favourite all-time YA book series EVER! This series IS EPIC!

So here we go to where it all began...

What a great introduction to an amazing story to come! SO much adventure -- kind of reminiscent of Alice in Wonderland meets the world of the fey! The momentum never seemed to let up! A true page-turner!

I loved how Meghan's character developed from a very naive girl in the beginning of the story to a young woman who matures on her quest to get her younger brother back from the faeries who stole him through selflessness and huge determination. Meghan also learns that she is the daughter of King Oberon, which makes her a faerie princess.

Although I figured the story would have somehow ended with Meghan finding Ethan... I have to admit I had my doubts she was at all capable at the beginning of the story... but she had a lot of help along the way (Puck, Ash & Grim among them)... and it seemed that her true kindness won out in the end.

I LOVED (Prince) Ash! His progression throughout the story was also quite remarkable -- from a cold and seemingly heartless knight of the Winter Court to the prince that falls for the forbidden faerie princess of the Summer Court and sacrifices himself to help Meghan in her quest to find her young brother. Their tender moments had me melting.

Puck was another wonderfully written character... charged to protect Meghan in the mortal world, but ended up going against his king's orders to return Meghan to the Summer Court, in order to help Meghan rescue her little brother. He was a true friend that Meghan could really count on for anything and also sacrifices himself for her and her quest. My heart went out to him. His fondness for Meghan was sort of like a big-brother but I got the sense that he might have some romantic feelings for her as well.

Grimalkin... the most unique cat you can imagine, but of course, feline in every way you would imagine. His wisdom and forethought got them out of several predicaments and helped Meghan on her quest as well.

The Nevernever was dangerous and there was no shortage of evil faeries hindering Meghan's efforts in getting her brother back. And what makes this story unique from other stories of the fey -- a new species is introduced -- the IRON fey -- evolved from technology and progress.

Lots of good messages in this story. This book tied up nicely with a couple little threads left hanging for future sequels. This is definitely the beginning of an epic series... I can feel it!

Summary:

Something has always felt slightly off in Meghan's life, ever since her father disappeared before her eyes when she was six. She has never quite fit in at school or at home.

The purpose of Cover Crazy is to feature a cover each week for us to admire its beauty. I really like this idea since there are so many great covers out there! Cover Crazy is a meme that was started by The Book Worms.

In my last Cover Crazy post I waxed lyrical about how awesome the US cover of Matched by Ally Condie is... this time, I’m showing the UK covers of Graceling and Fire by Kristin Cashore a little love. I don’t have a long in-depth analysis about these covers; I just think they are 100% made of awesome. So pretty, and I love the drama surrounding Katsa (Graceling) and Fire. In the flesh, these books have some wonderful hues of color coming through too. What I really like is the tiny glimpse of their faces; just enough to give you an idea, but give you the space to picture them for yourself.

Spellcaster transports the reader back into the world of soul-mates, Emma and Brendan. I was excited to spend more time with them and to see how Emma's witchy powers were coming along. However, these kids can't seem to catch a break. After their epic battle with Anthony, they are now on the defensive again as a sinister witch from Brendan's past is focused on bleeding Emma dry to use her blood in a spell of epic evil.

One of my main complaints with the first book is that there wasn't enough of a focus on the witchy elements. However, Spellcaster does not suffer from that same affliction. Shultz chose to have the witchcraft be a central focus of this book - I am grateful. I still got to see the characters I love, but this time the drama and danger felt more real. I was on the edge of my seat as Emma and Co. worked to figure out who was behind all the dark magic. Also, like in book one, we revisit a medieval legend that provides some foreshadowing of whats in store for Emma and Brendan.

As I mentioned in my review of book one, I love these characters. Yes, the dialogue can be a bit annoying at times as its littered with teen speak and attempts at humor, but I can overlook that because these characters have so many redeeming moments. I want to live in Emma and Brendan's world. There is just something compelling about them both. I also liked that in Spellcaster we get more involved in their relationship. Brendan is learning what it means to be in a committed relationship while Emma is struggling to overlook Brendan's past indiscretions. Seeing their fears and shortcomings laid out is quite poignant. I enjoyed watching as they navigated the issues in their relationship. In the end, they did a nice job of working through their conflicts and becoming a stronger couple. I love that Emma and Brendan are true partners and that they care deeply for the other. Their growth from the beginning of book one until the end of book two is another aspect that makes these reads interesting.

Spellcaster also allows the reader more time with Angelique. She is one of the most fascinating characters in this series. There are even a few moments where we get the story from her perspective. I loved seeing her become a more central element to the story. Watching her and Brendan evolve past their state of mutual dislike was also a strong point of this book for me.

My only major complaint is the cheesy dialogue that crops up from time to time. However, as I mentioned before, its something worth wading through because of the characters and the intrigue of the plot. I also am just a sucker for witch novels. I love the mythology and lore that surrounds Shultz's witches.

One Last Gripe: Kristen's role in everything was a bit too predictable.

My thoughts:
I liked this book so much more than I anticipated! It's YA based on fairy tale characters, and I had a bad experience with that once; I had to put Beastly aside after about 40 pages because just couldn't get into it. Dust City was much more readable, and after a while, I got past the fact that the characters are the same ones from the fairy tales, and just enjoyed the great story.

The grown-up interpretations of fairy tale elements were wonderfully woven into a great crime adventure story. You will recognize many of the characters, but in a way that almost seems as if the stories are based on these "real" people. You will definitely recognize many of the urban elements of the plot; the description of the city is gritty and overcast, creating a sense of danger that kicks the adventure factor up a notch.

I was half-expecting a silly little spoof on the Big Bad Wolf's tale. Instead, I got an engaging plot line that made the recycled characters really pop to life.

This book would be perfectly appropriate for those who like YA fantasy and/or adventure stories.

On the Writing & Story:

Dark Water is a complex story that lingers in your mind long after you have finished. Migrant workers, racism, and family drama all receive attention. This read is particularly relevant for teens today in light of some of the hateful and hurtful things that have been said against Mexicans in the United States. The lives of workers who are here illegally are not easy ones. Perhaps this book will help teens think before they spew hateful words at others.

The book tells Pearl's story. She is a fifteen year old girl who lives with her mother in the guest house on her uncle's avocado farm in southern California. Pearl's family has plenty of their own problems. Her dad walked out and took his support (both financial and emotional) with him. Pearl's mother never had to work before, but now she struggles to make ends meet by substitute teaching and working at a restaurant in town. Losing their house and all of their nicer possessions has taken its toll on both Pearl and her mother. Each of them has had to learn to cope with a more modest lifestyle. That's not always easy considering the wealth that surrounds them.

Pearl's life takes an unexpected turn when she first sees Amiel, a young man looking for work. She convinces her uncle to hire him and her life will be forever altered based on that one decision. Amiel is Mexican and he is in the United States illegally. He fears being found out and sent back home to Mexico. Amiel makes his home in a nature preserve because he has no other choice. To make matters worse, he suffered an injury to his throat as a child and doesn't speak often. Pearl discovers Amiel's secret and they form a friendship that soon turns into much more.

Dark Water has some elements of Romeo and Juliet. By society's standards, Pearl and Amiel should not be allowed to love one another. However, like most teens, Pearl is stubborn and focused on what she wants. She doesn't care what others think about her decision. I have to admire her for following her heart. Not everyone would be strong enough. However, I was frustrated with Pearl throughout most of this book. I know that love can make us do crazy things, but love made Pearl someone I wouldn't want to be around. She was selfish and didn't stop to think about her actions would affect others. I found it interesting that Pearl hated her father for his choices, but then she makes choices along the same lines. She is just as bad if not worse than he is in many ways. I could never have done some of the things Pearl does - even as a teen in love.

McNeal's writing is solid and this story is haunting, but overall I just couldn't find it in my heart to understand Pearl. Her actions wounded me. I struggled with how to rate this book, but in the end I decided I needed to balance my feelings with the merits of the book. I didn't enjoy the characters, but there are so many wonderful things about this read that makes it worth the time.

On the Audio:

The audio was well done, but it was nothing special. I was so angry with Pearl throughout most of this that I don't think I would have finished the book if it had not been on audio. Listening to it gave me a bit more tolerance than I would have had otherwise. This book was overwhelming at times - there is the family issues, the race issues, the love story, and the fire. It was a lot to process.

One Last Gripe: I don't feel like Pearl had enough remorse for the consequences of her actions.

My Favorite Thing About This Book: I loved learning about the avocado growing process

First Sentence: You wouldn't have noticed me before the fire unless you saw that my eyes, like a pair of socks chosen in the dark, don't match.

Favorite Character: I didn't really like any of the characters

Facts about Tucker: Tucker helps out on the family ranch, and is on the rodeo team. He loves his truck, Bluebell, almost as much as he loves his horse, Midas. He is a twin; his sister, Wendy, is best friends with the book's main character, Clara. Tucker calls Clara Carrots because of a bad hair dye job.

If before reading the books I'd read descriptions of Tucker and Christian, the two boys in this series, I'd have guessed I'd go for Christian- I usually love dark wavy hair, green eyes, broody and gorgeous. But Tucker is so much more real. He's written with such honesty and lack of pretense that I just can't keep from giving him a piece of my heart.

I do love a good Jane Austen. There's something very satisfying about having finished it. I think that it might be I survived all those commas!! I had forgotten quite how much Miss Austen enjoyed making little 'aside' comments during her sentences.

I particularly like this story because it is about a girl who wasn't very savvy about love when she found it, messed it up, and then thought she would live her lifetime regretting what happened; then she gets her second chance. I also find the romance so much more romantic in this sort of novel than the modern day romance literature because for me, less IS more. It's all about subtle glances, caught breaths and quiet flusterings here, which is absolutely how I operate when I like someone! I can identify with this.

Captain Wentworth is a much overlooked character of Austen's... he is just as dashing as Fitzwilliam Darcy, but he has had to build up his (considerable) wealth through his duties in the navy. Darcy is very swoonsome, but I have a soft spot for the guy who wasn't good enough for the girl's haughty family the first time around. It is satisfying to see how they react to him when his circumstances change.

Seeing as this is one of my all time favorites, you would think I'd give it 5 birdies... the story itself I would, but the writing I wouldn't. Although I got used to the style, it was off putting at first; it involves a lot more brain power than normal reading, but even this didn't convince me to knock it down to 4 birdies... what did it was when Anne and Frederick finally declared themselves there was no dialogue!! It must have been a long time since I read this, as I felt a little outraged - I didn't remember how this was glossed over at all. The movie versions have spoiled me over the years. I want teary-eyed proclamations of devotion... not a paragraph of descriptive prose of how they talked for a long while, rehashing all their issues. I want to know what they said. Details!!! *sigh*

At any rate, I still love this story, and I think I always will.

Delicacy is novel that dances across your mind leaving behind small footprints of thought. At its basic level, it is a novel of love and tragedy paying homage to the resilient nature of the human spirit, but there is so much more lingering within these pages. The prose is sparse yet eloquent and thought provoking. There are no adjectives to hide behind - just an evaluation of what it means to love deeply, mourn lost love, and find new love in the most unlikely of places.

Natalie and Francois have one of those storybook romances. They meet on a street in Paris and from that moment on they are a couple. Although their romance is a very small portion of this book, I found myself wrapped up in it. They have so many similarities between my husband and I. Therefore, when tragedy strikes and Francois is killed on his Sunday run, my heart was broken along with Natalie's. I couldn't stop imagining how I would feel in her situation. I cannot fathom being without my husband - he is my partner and best friend. It doesn't make sense to me that he could kiss me while I was lounging about reading and take off for a run and then just be gone. A few tears were shed on my part as I watched Natalie navigate the rocky waters of widowhood.

The remainder of the novel focuses on Natalie's return to work and her attempts to keep living when everything she lived for is gone. She throws herself into work and for three years cuts herself off from emotions. However, all that changes with a chance encounter with a quirky co-worker named Markus. Could Markus really be the key to Natalie waking up from her tragedy induced slumber? Could he really help her see that there is still joy to be had?

I love the language Foenkinos uses in his writing. It's gorgeous and haunting. Here are three examples of some lines that took hold of me and refused to let go:

- "Can you keep reading a book interrupted by the death of your husband?" (pg. 34)

- "On her body, the sentinels of death paraded nonstop." (pg. 47)

- " Truth often had the look of an iceberg." (pg. 62)

The writing is minimal yet speaks volumes. I love that the writing style and plot mirrors the very definition of delicacy.

I really only have one complaint with this one. There were some elements and references that didn't make sense to me. I am not sure if this is a product of my ignorance of French culture or a product of the translation process. Overall, the few things that I had no schema around didn't cause a barrier to my enjoyment of the novel, but there were moments when I had to consult google to figure things out. I also feel like I may have missed some key points that were better explained in the original French version.

One Last Gripe: I enjoyed that the format of this one was different - there were interesting little tidbits placed between chapters - but at times it was an unwelcome distraction.

My Favorite Thing About This Book: The writing style

I can’t wait for this book to come out... I’ve been reading the Bloggess’ blog for months now, and she has frequently had me crying with laughter. If you haven’t met Beyonce the Giant Metal Chicken (on her blog or Facebook), Ferris Mewler (her slightly deviant cat), or Hamlet Von Schitzel (the taxidermied mouse) then you are really missing out. What I enjoy is her genuine good nature, mixed in with a hefty dollop of weird humour. It shouldn’t be funny, but it really is. I have high hopes for this book.

On the Writing & Story:

I am a big fan of historical fiction - particularly historical fiction told through female perspectives. Sadly, women's stories weren't always heard throughout history so I enjoy seeing events told through the voices that were kept quiet at the time. Mattie Gokey's story is no exception to plight of other women in the early 1900's. In 1906, like most other girls her age, Mattie was expected to do whatever her father asked of her and marry a man who could take care of her. She was not supposed to have dreams of her own or dare speak of leaving her life behind for the glamour of New York City. Mattie wants to go to college in the big city and leave behind the rural life and isolation she has always known in the Adirondack Mountains in northern New York state. However, how can she even think about leaving when her family needs her?

A Northern Light is written with beautiful prose and flawless research. Jennifer Donnelly writes the story in a shifting narrative bouncing back and forth between Mattie's present as an employee at a hotel and her past as the daughter of a widower farmer who must help keep the farm and family running. Mattie knows she's not cut out to spend her life on a farm, but she finds herself without many options due to monetary circumstances. The family becomes so desperate for money that her father allows her to seek employment at a lakeside hotel in spite of his opposition to the idea. While at the Glennmore, Mattie meets a beautiful woman who carries sorrow around her shoulders like a shawl. When the young woman ends up dead, Mattie is drawn into a story of secrets and must decide how to best help the dead rest.

Furthermore, I really enjoyed the look at race relations in this time period. Weaver, one of Mattie's best friends, is one of the few African Americans in this area. The way he is treated by the other characters in this book speaks accurately on treatment of minorities during this era. I can't even imagine living life the way Weaver and his mother do - the constant fear of the actions of others and dealing with the fact that people saw you as less because of the color of your skin. The incident with the trappers also broke my heart. So many people think things like that only happened in the South, but alas racism is not restricted by geographic borders.

I was slightly disappointed that the book focused more on Mattie than on the Grace Brown murder aspects. I picked this one up on that element alone and while it did play a significant role in the plot and in Mattie's decisions, I felt like it was more of an after thought. Since Grace Brown's story is based in fact, I have been inspired to learn more about her death and the following trial. This book is so detailed and layered; it was overwhelming at times. I was, however, impressed with Donnelly's skill. I have heard wonderful things about her historical fiction works and this one didn't disappoint in spite of some of the more frustrating elements. I also couldn't give this a book a three because of the amount of talent Donnelly has as a writer. The book wasn't my favorite historical fiction read, but it has so much merit as a literary work.

On the Audio:

There were many segments of the book that were hard for me to get through in this format. I would find myself getting bored and zoning out only to find out that I had missed something integral. My finger became well acquainted with the rewind button during this one. Hope Davis has a pleasant voice, but it often lulled me into a state of submission where I lacked the ability to be an active participant in the reading. Due to the amount of detail in this one, I would suggest skipping the audio version for a more traditional format.

One Last Gripe: Royal annoyed me - I just wanted him to go away anytime he came on the scene

My Favorite Thing About This Book: I loved Mattie's obsession with words and her word battles with Weaver

A Discovery of Witches was an enjoyable but very complex read on so many levels. The plot was intricately woven, the characters had depth and were interesting, and TONS of research obviously had to have gone into the technical aspects of it... it was simply mind-boggling, and admittedly lost me at times, but the story itself had me glued. If I could give half birdies, I would rate it 4.5 for me only because I was a tad frustrated with the scholarly speak, but am rounding it up to five birdies because it was really a great book overall and hard to put down for the most part!

The best way I can describe A Discovery of Witches is that it's like Twilight for grown-ups. Now, before you roll your eyes... it's not the same story! There were definitely some Twilight-ish elements present -- the parallels were just barely recognizable but there. And that's not a complaint because I also happen to love the Twilight books, but at the same time, Deborah Harkness's story is essentially her own, and I would challenge anyone who didn't enjoy Twilight to give this book serious consideration.

Forbidden love is the central theme, and in this story, a 1500 year old vampire (who doesn't look a day over 37) falls in love with a seemingly reluctant witch. Diana Bishop is the reluctant witch in question and a scholar at Oxford University in England. Her research at the Bodleian Library, located on the Oxford campus, focuses on analyzing historical alchemical manuscripts. The beginning of the story starts off with Diana about to analyze the mysterious manuscript, Ashmole 782. Some inexplicable reactions from the book itself unnerves Diana and so she returns the manuscript to the stacks, with the intent on looking at it another time. However, this is not the end of it. Diana calling on Ashmole 782 has also caused a flurry of interest within the supernatural creatures community, who have been seeking the manuscript for years, including Professor Matthew Clairmont... the 1500 year old vampire.

In this story, 'creatures' consist of witches, vampires and daemons. A covenant set out centuries earlier declared that the three different species of creatures could not and would not "mix". Once it becomes clear that Diana and Matthew's relationship is progressing... powerful leaders in the creatures community will stop at nothing to separate them. Why? You will have to read to find out, but it fundamentally has something to do with alchemical explanations found in Ashmole 782.

Diana and Matthew's relationship is quite unique, and at the same time, beautiful. Some modern women might bristle at the manner in which Matthew conducts himself, and those around him, but you have to remember that he is 1500 years old... and a vampire... not a normal human being only knowing modern societal mannerisms. And I loved his protectiveness of Diana as their relationship evolved. His adoration for her was very evident. Diana, the scholarly woman that she is, fell hard and fast for him. The vampires' customs were very old-fashioned but it worked in this story.

The supporting cast of characters were AWESOME... including The House! Diana's aunts in the U.S. and Matthew's family in France were all complex members, richly woven into the story. The bad-guys were expertly written... and put the fear of God into you.

Melting romance, intriguing mythology... and you can't help but get somewhat educated in the process. If I had a complaint about this story, it would just be that I had a hard time understanding much of the technical aspects of it. While I did learn a little bit more about DNA and alchemy with a bit of history thrown in, some of it admittedly went over my head, and it bothered me that I was perhaps missing some connections. I wouldn't call the ending a "throw-your-book-against-the-wall" cliffhanger but it did leave me anxious to see where the author will take us in the next book. Overall, it was a really good read and I'm really looking forward to the next installment.

Cover Crazy: Torn

I am obsessed with the covers in this series. They are just so pretty. I have to admit that I haven't read the first book, but I would buy these on cover alone. I love the blues; its a nice change from the blood red that was used on the first cover. This one gives me a sense of cold and loneliness. This cover conjures up thoughts of winter evenings and snowfall. I also love the font of the title and how it is set apart from the rest of the cover. The partially open gate in the background intrigues me. Where does it lead? Why was it left open? I could go on and on. I love the attention to the detail in this one. What are your thoughts on it?

We discovered this meme at Ya-Aholic, where it runs on Fridays. It sounded like a fun addition to our lineup, but fits better here on Sundays. This is based on the basic Magic Lamp = 3 wishes idea. Since there are so many of us, though, we're just taking one each per week.

My thoughts:

I've said it before: as a reader, I have a tendency to pick up a lot of high tension, action-packed, emotionally charged material. If that's what you like too, then Legend is the book for you. Additionally, if you enjoy a read with a lot of visual appeal- books that you can vividly "see" as you read- you will definitely enjoy this book.

I usually try to avoid comparisons in book reviews, but I'm making an exception this time because so many of my favorite pieces of literature came to mind as I was considering how to explain my enthusiasm. To start with, anyone who knows me well knows I've been pushing Divergent by Veronica Roth as a new favorite dystopian since the book came out last June. Legend has earned a spot as the what-you-need-to-read-next book. I love my YA dystopians, and these two are prime examples of why.

When I finished reading Legend, I sat there thinking, "I've seen this theme before: bad guy who is good, relentlessly sought by the officer of the law." Thank you, Marie Lu, for putting my mind at ease; she tells us in the jacket blurb that Legend is a retelling of that theme, from Les Miserables: my favorite musical ever.

We see Romeo and Juliet comparisons all the time. I think it's especially fitting for this book, because the two main characters are literally mortal enemies, know just as little about each other, and are just as inexplicably drawn to each other. Their society is just as crushingly restrictive, and the only way they would have a chance to even explore the possibility of a relationship is to remove themselves from it.

The visual appeal of this book is why I thought of Scott Westerfeld's Uglies series. I can see the landscape of decaying architecture. I see the Manga-like characters. I see the super-human physical movements of the characters, creating action sequences that make the book as appealing to guys as it is to girls.

I will be pushing this book now- consider yourself warned. Join me in anticipating book 2!

This is a well completed first novel in a planned trilogy - although it reads just fine as a stand alone novel. What I really like is that at the end of the book, I have larger questions about the consequences of the events of this book, but my immediate questions have been satisfied so I don't feel like I'm being left hanging. Good job!!

I found it hard to get into the flow of the book initially, as most of the characters are functionally illiterate and the language is often written phonetically to bring across this idea, and there's a fair lack of punctuation too. It didn't take long to sink into the story though. And what a lot of story there is!! There are so many great scenes and such a variety of thinking points here...

I liked the world that the characters inhabited... its set in our future and initially all we see is desert with wreckage of past times in. It felt a little like Mad Max, and a little like Tatooine (or other desert-ish planets) from Star Wars (giant clawed worms... is all I'm saying.) Saba's twin brother, Lugh, is kidnapped suddenly & violently from their barren homestead, leaving her with no living parents and a 9 year old sister to deal with... who she has never much bonded with. So Saba sets off into the desert with her sister Emmie to try and find Lugh and rescue him.

Its hard going, as well as the sisterly spats, the people they meet can be very dangerous. I felt that there was a definite influence drawn from Cormac McCarthy's The Road, but I enjoyed this a whole lot more... Saba is resolutely positive and determined.

She deals with all manner of things, including fighting daily for survival, and she has several leaps of faith to make in deciding who to trust in her journey. She travels a long way (a la Maria V Snyder) with some excellent companions, including a very worthy verbal sparring partner - Jack (hottie!!). Particular mention has to be made of her faithful companion, Nero the crow. Coolest animal side kick EVER. (In fact, I now want my own crow.) Without him, this wouldn't be a five star review!!

It's brutal in places, desolate in others, but it captivated me and I am definitely up for another installment, if only so I can covet Nero some more!!

Summary:

Blood Red Road has a searing pace, a poetically minimal writing style, violent action, and an epic love story. Moira Young is one of the most promising and startling new voices in teen fiction.

This book had me at cupcake. I have a small addiction to delightful little treats. I am constantly seeking out cupcake shops to test out their goods and hunting for recipes to make my own yummy treats at home. I went into this expecting a light, sugary chick lit concoction, but I ended up getting so much more than that. Layered among the delicious cupcake references lurked family secrets and a dark mystery. This book took me by surprise and I loved savoring every moment of it.

How to Eat a Cupcake follows the story of Annie and Julia, two estranged childhood friends who haven't managed to get over past wrongs. However, a chance meeting at a social function, brings these two back together and sets them on to a path of becoming business partners. Julia has a mind for profits and she knows that Annie's cupcakes are delicious enough to be worth the investment. Annie eventually decides that she needs to leave her personal feelings about Julia aside in order to gain the financial capital she needs to start the bakery of her dreams.

At the heart of this book are friendship and forgiveness. I enjoyed watching Annie and Julia's friendship evolve and grow into something new. I also thought it was particularly interesting that how these women chose to eat a cupcake spoke such volumes on their personalities. These two women became dear friends to me during the hours it took me to read the book. I finished the bulk of it in one sitting. I wanted to make sure that both of these women would be okay when I had completed the last sentence. Plus, I have to admit that their journey to opening and running Treat made me want a cupcakery of my very own. I know its a lot of hard work to run a business like that, but I can't help but imagine how fun and rewarding it would also be.

I also loved the setting of this one. Reading this book makes me want to visit San Francisco as soon as possible. Donohue does a nice job of describing the setting in such a way that I could see everything as Julia and Annie did. I have never been to San Francisco, but this novel showed me that it has a lot to offer. If only Treat really existed....

Furthermore, I fell in love with Meg Donohue's writing style. I loved that she alternated between Annie's perspective and Julia's perspective. It was nice to know what each woman was thinking. Donohue has a down to earth style that feels comfortable and warm. I can imagine spending more time in the presence of her words in the future. I was quite impressed when I learned that this was a debut novel. Its such a well put together plot and the characters are addicting and complex.

This novel is a must read for cupcake lovers, foodies, and fans of women's fiction. I hesitate to call this chick lit because in my mind that term conjures up light, fluffy romances laden with girl power and sarcasm (perhaps I am wrong in that assumption). How to Eat a Cupcake doesn't follow that format; it is much more complex. My one caution - be prepared for your sweet tooth to rise up in protest that Annie's cupcakes are only fictional. You might just have to go in search of an adequate cupcake substitute.

One Last Gripe: I wasn't ready for the story to end. I would love to read more books featuring Annie & Julia.
